As the global economic crisis worsens, countries around the world are looking to for solutions and alternatives to ensure that the global financial system will come out from the crisis stronger and more resilient. With the economic rise of China and India in the last two decades, Asia is now in a position to play a significant role in the reform of the global financial architecture that has relied mainly on the Bretton Woods Institutions. While the story unfolds, what would be America’s role be in the new global financial arena? Mr Kimmitt will share his personal insights at this breakfast for IPS Corporate Associates.

Mr Robert Kimmitt served from 2005-2009 as Deputy Secretary of the US Treasury, with significant responsibility for Treasury’s international agenda, including cross-border investment in his leadership role on the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States. For his service, he received the Department’s highest honor, the Alexander Hamilton Award. From 1991 to 1993, he was the US Ambassador to Germany. Mr Kimmitt served from 1989 to 1991 as Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs.
From 1985 to 1987, Mr Kimmitt was General Counsel to the US Treasury. He served at the White House as National Security Council Executive Secretary and General Counsel from 1983 to 1985, with the rank of Deputy Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs. From 1976 to 1977 and 1978 to 1983, Mr Kimmitt was a member of the NSC Staff.
Before rejoining the government in 2005, Mr Kimmitt was Chairman of the International Advisory Council of Time Warner Inc., where he had served from 2001 to 2005 as Executive Vice President, Global Public Policy. He was also Senior International Counsel in the law firm of Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr. Earlier, Mr Kimmitt was Vice Chairman and President of Commerce One, a software company headquartered in the San Francisco Bay area. From 1997 to 2000, Mr Kimmitt was a partner at Wilmer, Cutler & Pickering, and from 1993 to 1997 he was a managing director of Lehman Brothers. From 1987 to 1989, Mr Kimmitt was a partner in the law firm of Sidley & Austin. He has served on numerous corporate and non-profit boards, both at home and abroad.
