Dr Chiang Wai Fong is a Research Fellow at the Institute of Policy Studies.

Dr Chiang is a trained linguistic anthropologist. She obtained her PhD degree from the University of Texas at Austin and her MA degree from the University of Essex (UK). Her dissertation research was partly funded by the National Science Foundation (US). Dr Chiang’s research focuses on examining the semiotic processes through which ideologies of language differentiation are formed in a community. In addition, she looks at processes of intergenerational language negotiation and their implications on traditional family values, family structure, as well as heritage language maintenance. She also has experiences instructing and tutoring students both in the US and in Singapore. Before her postgraduate studies, Dr Chiang was a journalist with the local flagship Chinese language newspaper, Lianhe Zaobao (联合早报).
