Singapore Perspectives book is out
IPS' annual conference Singapore Perspectives sparked off a debate in the media about whether an all-out emphasis on economic growth is leaving too many Singaporeans behind in the 'dual economy' that is being created. The flagship event of the institute, attended by almost 800 people, also held discussions on immigration and Singapore identity, the Internet and society, and the future of ASEAN. The book of the papers is now out.

In an essay written specially for this newsletter, Visiting Research Fellow Tan Pin Pin reflects on this conflicting relationship of government funding with her own work and the arts in general.

IPS has started a series of workshops to address issues of sustainable growth. In the first, held last month, architect and lecturer Tay Kheng Soon likened Singapore to a "city of light," one designed for sustainable, not just material, growth. He proposed some ideas on how domestic life and the urban infrastructure could change from being a generator of un-sustainability to a means for supporting what he called "sustain-ment".
