Mr Ong Keng Yong is new IPS Director
Former secretary-general of ASEAN and now Ambassador-at-Large Ong Keng Yong has been appointed the new Director of IPS. Mr Ong is IPS' first director since it merged with the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy this year.

Bloggers give take on Malaysian elections and lessons for Singapore
At a recent roundtable entitled "Impact of ICTs on the Malaysian Elections: Lessons for Singapore", prominent bloggers, including new Opposition Member of Parliament Jeff Ooi, and the editor of online newspaper Malaysiakini spoke about the role that the Internet and new media played in the polls. They also addressed whether the Malaysian experience held any lessons for Singapore.

IPS' Singapore Perspectives 2008 Conference earlier this year examined questions about the country's future in the next generation. The report contains summaries of the proceedings and is now available for reading.

"Singapore-Iskandar integration needs political will to work"
There are obstacles to overcome before Singapore and Malaysia can reap the great benefits of Singapore's integration with the Iskandar Development Region in Johor, said IPS Adjunct Senior Research Fellow Manu Bhaskaran at an IPS Corporate Associates event. Most of the roadblocks are political – and there are good signs that they can be dismantled.

Life after the East Asian miracle
The subprime crisis has raised the question in the region of which East Asian economy will remain resilient as the full effects of the dislocations in the West play out. Which East Asian economies might be relatively more resilient than others? And what should the policy responses be in these economies? Dr Vikram Nehru, Acting Chief Economist in the East Asia Region of the World Bank, addressed these questions in a recent roundtable at IPS.

New book on religious diversity to be launched in August
Singapore's religious diversity is the subject of a new IPS book that is slated for release in August. Edited by former IPS Senior Research Fellow Lai Ah Eng, the volume contains new research by well-known authors that will fill important gaps in the knowledge and understanding of Singapore's religious diversity and complexity. It also has a forward by President S. R. Nathan.

"ASEAN can learn some lessons from EU"
In a review of a new book on European integration, IPS Director Ong Keng Yong discusses the difference between the approaches to integration in the European Union and ASEAN and the lessons that can be learned from the former.

"Only the public can save itself from ill effects of the Internet"
IWith the way the Internet and other new communication technologies are developing, there is little or nothing the state or even sagely committees can do to save the public from undesirable effects unless the public is prepared to save itself. IPS Deputy Director Arun Mahizhnan said this at a seminar on a proposal by bloggers urging for a reform of Internet regulation in Singapore.

"Malaysia's 'political tsunami' unlikely in Singapore"
The so-called political tsunami that hit the ruling Barisan Nasional coalition in the Malaysia elections in March has been partly attributed to the impact of the Internet and other technologies. This is unlikely to occur for a number of reasons in Singapore, said Senior Research Fellow Tan Tarn How at a forum in Kuala Lumpur.

Possible Policy responses to trends affecting families
At a recent conference organised by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, Senior Research Fellow Yap Mui Teng examined five global trends that affect families in the region: ageing, changes in family structures, migration, the HIV/AIDS pandemic and globalisation. Her paper also discussed the policy responses for the Government to deal with these issues.
