In The Next Lap, the government of Singapore highlighted its goals for the future, addressing Singapore's physical, economic and social development. In the light of this, City and the State aims at revisiting Singapore's built environment, since her independence three decades ago, highlighting past, present and future land-use planning and development. In striving to be a global city and city of excellence, Singapore, with her limited resources and environmental needs, has to take into account the concerns and demands of the urban and affluent community. A broad aim is a consideration of the "construction" of Singapore's urban built environment both by practising professionals and policy-makers. This book covers the planning, economics, socio-cultural dimension, public perception and safety of the built environment. Efforts directed at addressing the issues in the book can augur improvement in the quality of the built environment, and make it more accommodating to the varying needs of the city and her people.
