On 21-22 June 1991, the Singapore Council of Social Service, the Institute of Policy Studies and the Community Chest of Singapore jointly organised a conference on Social Services: The Next Lap to increase public awareness and understanding of the needs of the community, to map out the future directions for social services in Singapore and to assist voluntary welfare organisations develop long-term plans to meet the community's needs. Three hundred and thirty civil servants, academics, professionals, experts in social services and volunteers discussed the future needs and directions in five service areas: the disabled, the disadvantaged families and children, the youth, the elderly and mental health. This book contains the main papers presented at the conference together with commentaries and discussions. It is vital reading for policy-makers, volunteers who are interested in social services or care about the disadvantaged members of our society and everyone else who is interested in making Singapore a truly compassionate and caring society.
